Story of Icarus by Don Taco

Story Of Icarus                                                                                                             copyright 2013 by Don Taco

all I have to live for     all I hope to see

all that I look forward to     after all is done

once again to walk the earth     once again to be

reunited with the sun

by the ten thousand gods that I worship

I swear that all I’ve done was right

but I stare at the walls of this cold foreign prison

and my faith is small comfort tonight

to the ten thousand gods, we’re just playthings

and I’ve known my share of hard times

but I don’t think I’ve heard of a greater injustice

than to punish my son for my crimes

to soar like the eagle     dive like the falcon

dart like the sparrow     glide like the kite

to climb from these caves

jump off of this mountain

fly to my homeland tonight

rise with the birds     on borrowed feathers

above these prison walls     home beckoning

young, strong and righteous     cast off the fetters

youth so impetuous     testing its wings

what have I done     do I deserve this

who did I wrong to     earn such penalty

where can I turn to     petition for redress

wherefore the gods     if none watch over me

to soar like the eagle     dive like the falcon

dart like the sparrow     glide like the kite

give yourself over to

reckless abandon

lost in the rapture of flight

resisting temptation gets easier with age

deferring joys till tomorrow

knowing I warned him still fills me with rage

blaming myself for this sorrow

to outlive your children, so cruel and unjust

the gods putting men in their place

I'd choose instead to be blind and insane

than to witness that long fall from grace

to soar like the eagle     dive like the falcon

dart like the sparrow     glide like the kite

undo the arrogance

of blind invention

return my son to my sight

all I have to live for     all I hope to see

all that I look forward to     after all is done

once again to walk the earth     once again to be

reunited with my sun
